If you’re like me, you set up your LinkedIn profile over five years ago, update it whenever you get a new job or gig, and use it mostly to connect with people you’ve met at conferences. There’s nothing wrong with this – except that the things you wrote about yourself five years ago may be a bit outdated.
I had the chance to meet with the team at LinkedIn, including Julia Cabral, Senior Product Marketing Manager, and she gave me the rundown of how to make your LinkedIn profile a much more effective tool. Trust me, it’s easy and it will make a world of a difference.
Update your summary so it’s SEO-friendly.
I knew that LinkedIn ranked high in Google, but it didn’t quite click that it was an SEO-gold mine. Whether you are an industry professional or a small business owner, review your summary to make sure that SEO keywords you want to be ranked and known for are written above the fold (before the “read more” clickable text shows up). Having trouble writing a good summary? Put yourself in the shoes of a potential client or recruiter.
Your profile picture should reflect you in your industry.
Your profile image doesn’t have to be a head shot. LinkedIn is a professional place but that doesn’t mean you have to be suited up. Turns out, profiles that have a relatable image that reflect you in your industry do best.
Add your industry.
According to LinkedIn, their data showed that profiles were nine times more likely to get viewed by including an industry. If you are a jack of all trades, choose the one that you would most want to be recruited or hired for and focus on that.
Ask for those recommendations.
This is an obvious and understated one. I was never one to care about having recommendations on my page until I realized that I actually read the ones on other people’s pages. Don’t be afraid to ask former or current clients to put in a good word. Oftentimes, they are more than happy to do this!
If you’re a small business or a freelancer, create a company page.
Why? It’ll give you more credibility and you can attach that page to your job role in your profile. That way, your logo or a picture can show up alongside your role and prospective clients will feel more legitimacy in your company. It literally takes less than five minutes to do and changes the entire vibe of your profile.
These easy-to-do tactics will not only help your profile look more put-together but rank you higher if someone is searching for a person with your expertise. At the end of the day, LinkedIn is a helpful tool to get you connected professionally, so put in those extra few minutes and make sure that you are completely up-to-date.
