Dante’s Inferno Coming to Xbox Backward Compatibility | Gaming

While Visceral Games may be best known for its work on the Dead Space series, the studio also released a God of War-inspired take on The Divine Comedy called Dante’s Inferno. The game received mixed reviews at the time of its release, but still managed to find some fans, who will be happy to know that the hack and slash action game is now playable on Xbox One thanks to the backward compatibility program.

As of yesterday, July 17, the Xbox 360 version of Dante’s Inferno is playable on Xbox One. Anyone who purchased the game digitally should see it in their Ready to Download section on the console, and anyone who still owns a physical disc of the game can simply pop it in and start playing. Furthermore, those who are subscribed to EA Access will have free access to the game at some point later this week, though an exact date has yet to be revealed.

Dante’s Inferno isn’t the only game recently added to the Xbox One backward compatibility program. It’s joined by RUSE, a military real-time strategy game that earned decent reviews at the time of its release, and is notable for having been removed from Steam in 2015 due to a licensing issue. With the game no longer available for purchase on Steam, at least it’s now playable on some form of modern gaming hardware.

Whenever games are added to the backward compatibility program, there’s always hope from fans that they will do well and convince publishers to move forward with sequels. Dante’s Inferno fans in particular may be hoping for the game to get a sequel, especially since the original ended on a cliffhanger that continues to go unresolved.

Unfortunately, even if Dante’s Inferno enjoys a sales boost similar to the one Red Dead Redemption saw when it was added to the backward compatibility program, it’s unlikely that it will get a sequel. The game isn’t known for being a best-selling title, and while there were some hints that Visceral was working on a sequel at one point, the studio’s closure means that a followup is even less likely than it was before.

While some may be disappointed that a sequel to Dante’s Inferno doesn’t seem to be in the cards, at least they can now play the original on Xbox One.

Dante’s Inferno is available now for PS3, PSP, and Xbox 360.
