West Side Library Opens Soon

Officials for the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County promise a more tech-oriented experience for patrons of its new Michael Kusalaba branch, which is slated for an early February opening.
In addition to typical library offerings, the branch will feature a “makerspace” which will give patrons access to high-tech equipment including a 3-D printer and laser engraver.
Patrons can also access a soundproof recording room.
“We’re hoping we can spur the creative juices of the local community,” said Aimee Fifarek, the library’s executive director.
Other high-tech features will include a machine similar to a vending machine from which patrons can check out laptop computers to use anywhere in the library and a digital transfer machine which can digitize old family photos.

The building itself has a modern feel that stands out at its 2815 Mahoning Ave. location with a distinctive zig-zag design.

Architect Ron Faniro said the design originated from the folded-plate roof on the addition of the former West Side library, which closed in 2016.

“I stood it up on its end and kind of went from there,” Faniro said. “It’s a gesture to some of the aesthetic that was here.”

The project was budgeted at $2.8 million. The Michael Kusalaba Fund donated $1.68 toward the project in exchange for naming rights.

Kusalaba, who died in 2009, was an electrical engineer and 1964 Chaney High School graduate.

“I think it’s a different approach,” said David Ritchie, president of the library’s board of trustees. “It provides more options for people, and that’ll be great.”

Fifarek hopes the library will serve as a gathering space for the community. It has one large meeting room and two smaller rooms with conference tables.

That community involvement extends outside of the building. A grove of nine maple trees pays homage to the Rocky Ridge Neighbors association, which taps maple trees in Mill Creek MetroParks each year and sell the syrup to raise money for the park and other initiatives.

Earlier discussions mentioned the possibility of educational sessions at the library to teach people how to tap maple trees.

Fifarek said she looks forward to welcoming the community to the branch.

“We are very happy to be back at the original site of the West library,” she said. “And we’re happy to welcome all of the patrons back.”
