At RoboBusiness, iRobot’s Adam Cantor to Give Closing Keynote
RoboBusiness, the event produced by Robotics Business Review, has announced its closing keynote speaker for the 2019 event. Adam Cantor, of iRobot and Robots in Service of the Environment (RISE), will present “Robots Save the Environment”, discussing the importance of leveraging robotic technology to help solve environmental challenges.
From the shutdown of a nuclear reactor, to stopping oil spills, and reducing plastics in our oceans, robots are starting to play a significant role in protecting the environment. Cantor will discuss these efforts, as well as RISE’s mission to apply robotic technologies to solve environmental problems while inspiring the next generation of scientists and engineers.
RISE is helping to save our oceans from the invasive and venomous lionfish, which are causing the devastating reduction in biodiversity and damaging coral reefs. Cantor will detail efforts underway to create an affordable, unmanned undersea robot designed to dive 1,000 feet deep to help control the lionfish population.
About Adam Cantor
In addition to being a career roboticist and futurist, Cantor acts as the primary R&D lead for all platforms and innovations as the director of engineering at RISE. With 10 years of robotics research in intelligent prosthetics, bio-inspired design, swarm theory, autonomous vehicles, and robot mass production, he is responsible for the development of all new technologies leveraged by RISE in its mission to defend the natural world.
Beginning in 2009, Adam began work in Center for Intelligent Mechatronics at Vanderbilt University in order to implement stumble recovery behaviors into an intelligent transfemoral prosthesis. Gaining an initial taste for bio-inspired algorithms and design, he then worked under a DARPA grant in 2011 to create a micro-aerial flapping wing vehicle based on the flight dynamics of the hawk moth. In 2013 Adam joined the Hu Lab for Biolocomotion where he led a team of students to design and build a scalable swarm of fire ant-like hexopod robots. By improving and integrating a model of fire ant 3D assemblage, Adam was able to prove the robots capable of building self-assembly to conquer new challenges with distributed behaviors. This work was then built upon in 2015 through a partnership with Ford Automotive by adding the Artificial Bee Colony algorithm to simulate and test large scale fleets of autonomous vehicles.
Cantor, originally from New Orleans, now lives in Boston. He earned his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Vanderbilt University, and a master’s degree in mechanical engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology. Adam volunteers his time to several causes related to the environment, and what time remains on wildlife education efforts and physical fitness.

Additional keynotes at RoboBusiness 2019 include Dr. Howie Choset, the Kavcic-Moura Professor of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University, and Dr. Robin R. Murphy, Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at Texas A&M University.
