YouTube “Super Thanks” Feature to help creators earn money from fans

YouTube has experimented with many different ways to help creators earn money on its platform, and now the entertainment giant is bringing out one more. You can now send your favorite a “super thanks” to show your appreciation.

What Is a YouTube Super Thanks?

YouTube announced its new feature on its official blog. The new super thanks feature aims to fill a gap left in YouTube's current monetary plans.

Previously, if someone wanted to earn donations from fans, they could earn them through one of three ways. The first was to encourage people to “join” the channel, which is a little different than subscribing. While subscribing is free and lets you know when new uploads arrive, joining a channel costs $4.99 a month and unlocks member perks.

Then there are super chats and super stickers. Super chats allowed someone to send a message during a live stream with a little extra color and pinned their comment to the top of the chatroom. Each pay bracket has its own unique color, and the more you pay, the longer your message sticks to the top.

Super stickers work in a similar way to super chats, but instead of writing a message, you pick from one of many animated emotes to represent how you're feeling.

All of these are fantastic ways for people to make money with YouTube, but there's a catch. All of them only really work when someone streams content on YouTube, and people who upload videos don't really benefit from any of them bar the memberships.

This is where the new super thanks feature come in. It works very similarly to super chats, but it's aimed more toward video uploads than live streams. If someone posts a video you love, you can choose one of four pay brackets, ranging from $2 to $50.

When you send the thanks, you get to see a special animation to celebrate your donation. You'll also get to post a message reading “Thanks!” into the comments, colored in accordance with how much you spent. The creator can then reply to you as they can to any comment.

The super thanks feature is currently in beta and available to select creators, so if you don't see the option pop up on your fave video, hang tight for YouTube to roll out this feature to more people.

A Big Thanks to YouTube for Super Thanks

YouTube wants to help creators make money on its platform, but until now, only live streamers have really benefitted from the monetization options. Video uploaders will appreciate the new super thanks option to earn some money from fans.

Of course, fan donations are not the only way YouTube creators can earn money. Avenues like advertising also help people make a living by making content.
