Firefox Will Soon Tell You When You’ve Been Pwned | Tech News
An upcoming Firefox feature will alert you when your information leaks, and 1Password users have access to a similar feature right now.
Have I Been Pwned is a site by Troy Hunt, a security expert, where you can enter your email address and find out if any of your accounts are compromised. The problem: you have to actively go to the site in order to use it, meaning it’s only really effective if you check back regularly.
Mozilla this week announced Firefox Monitor, which connects to Have I Been Pwned’s database to push notifications to Firefox users when an account is compromised. 250,000 users will get test access to the feature next week, but it should eventually become part of Firefox. We’ll let you know when that happens.
RELATED: Why You Should Use a Password Manager, and How to Get Started
1Password, a password manager, has already added this sort of integration, and you can access it right now in the Windows, Mac, and web version of the service.
If an account is compromised you need to change your password, and if you re-use passwords you need to change your password for every account. These services will help you find out when this happens, which should reduce the odds of anyone doing anything nefarious with your accounts.
You can read more about these features on Troy Hunt’s website. It’s a fascinating read.
