10 of the oddest special edition phones of all time | Apps News
Latest Apps and Software News
Phone manufacturers occasionally make special edition handsets that help promote the device and bring attention to a partnered brand. While these phones tend to become collectibles, sometimes the gadget just ends up looking peculiar. Here are 10 of the oddest special edition phones of all time.
Xiaomi Mi 6X Hatsune Miku Edition
The saying is that a photo is worth a thousand words. Well, after looking at the picture of this special edition Xiaomi Mi 6X, there aren’t enough words to describe the Hatsune Miku Edition handset.
Partnered with Vocaloid, Xiaomi released this handset styled after the blue-haired virtual J-popstar, Hatsune Miku. 5,000 of these smartphones were sold in China for 2,099 yuan (~$317). The Hatsune Miku Edition handset comes in a collectible box alongside a case, a 10,000mAh battery back, and a gift card.
Razer Phone special edition
Alongside the announcement of its gaming-focused smartphone, Razer showed off a special edition handset that would feature the company’s bright neon green logo on the back of the device. Razer produced 1,337 (leet!) special edition units and the only difference between the two models was the fact that logo included the company’s trademarked color instead of a muted chrome.
OnePlus 6 Marvel Avengers Limited Edition
OnePlus has released a limited edition themed handset exclusive to foreign markets with almost every new smartphone launch. For the OnePlus 6, the company unveiled a partnership with Marvel’s Avengers. The phone came with gold accents, an Avengers logo on the back, exclusive wallpapers from the movie, and an Iron Man case.
The odd aspect of this special edition OnePlus 6 was that each handset shipped with one of six collectible metal pieces. OnePlus wanted customers to trade and buy other people’s puzzle pieces until they had all six to enter into a contest to win a high tech adventure trip to Dubai’s IMG World of Adventure featuring a Marvel Zone.
Vivo Xplay6 Steph Curry Limited Edition
Vivo has been getting a lot of attention as of late after it showed off an in-display fingerprint sensor at CES and recently released a phone with a unique way to hide its camera. But before all of this, Vivo launched a limited edition Steph Curry variant of the Xplay 6.
The special edition phone and the other included goodies are themed after the Golden State Warriors, the basketball team that Curry plays on. This means that buyers received a vibrant blue Vivo phone with golden accents, a Warriors sports towel, a wristband, and a customized finger mount.
LG Signature Edition phone
Do you like the idea of the LG V35 ThinQ but found it not to be premium enough for you? Well LG has good news for you as it has introduced the Signature Edition phone. The phone is mainly unchanged hold for a zirconium ceramic backing (instead of glass) that should result in fewer scratches, a spec bump up to 256GB of built-in storage, and the inclusion of $499 Bang and Olufsen Beoplay H9i wireless headphones.
LG is going to sell 300 of these Signature Edition smartphones in Korea starting on August 13. Customers can buy the phone for 1,999,800 won (~$1,792).
Huawei Mate RS Porsche Design
The Huawei P20 Pro is a fantastic smartphone, but some improvements could be made. Enter the Huawei Mate RS Porsche Design. This handset is almost identical to Huawei’s latest flagship, but with a tweaked design and specs.
The best way to describe this phone is if a Huawei Mate 10 had a baby with the P20 Pro. The internals are almost the same as the P20 Pro (including the triple-camera setup), but the design resembles the Mate 10. Three other changes that account for the phone’s €1,695 (~$2,103) or €2,095 (~$2,599) price tag is 256GB or 512GB of built-in storage, wireless charging, and an in-display fingerprint sensor. Oh, and we can’t forget about the Porsche Design logos that are scattered throughout the handset.
Oppo Find X Lamborghini Edition
Here we have yet another car-themed special edition smartphone that costs outrageously more than the standard model primarily due to the device’s branding. The things that differentiate the Oppo Find X Lamborghini Edition from the standard variant are the use of Oppo’s SuperVOOC fast battery charging technology, a unique carbon fiber material that’ll be fitted under the back glass, and a jump up to 512GB of storage.
Other than that, the 1,699 euro phone’s box is designed after the headlights on the Lamborghini Aventador and the woven USB Type-C cable is modeled after the V12 engine’s ignition coil.
HTC X PHUNK One M8
Back in 2014, HTC had some of the most premium-feeling Android smartphones on the market primarily due to their metal build. To celebrate the One M8, HTC collaborated with PHUNK Studios to release 64 engraved handsets. To up the ante, HTC had half of these special edition smartphones coated in silver while the other half were covered in gold.
Vertu TI Ferrari Limited Edition
You might know Vertu as the smartphone brand that sold moderately-high-end handsets for insanely high prices. While this price structure is typically due to the phones being encrusted in diamonds and having access to the company’s 24/7 concierge service, Vertu took it up to a new level back in 2013.
Launched in collaboration with the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta, the Vertu TI Ferrari was stylized after the car and featured the same leather found inside the supercar. But what was really crazy was the $16,309 price tag.
Meitu M8s Dragon Ball Z, Sailor Moon, Doraemon, and Hello Kitty Special Editions
To wrap up this list of odd special edition phones, we had to take a moment and admire the entire collection of Meitu M8s.
These four phones feature a brightly-colored design and a large graphic from Dragon Ball Z, Sailor Moon, Doraemon, or Hello Kitty. It’s not clear if these phones are the perfect fit for diehard fans or if the in-your-face design is too much.
