How to install Android Pie on your phone right now | Apps News

A release version of is now available to download for Google Pixel phones.

Google originally showcased some interesting Android Pie features at its Google I/O developer event back in May and the version of Android Pie that is rolling out isn’t a final version – some features have been held back for the Autumn. Specifically, these are the “slices” search features (which require compatible apps, so expect demos and app launches at the Pixel 3 event in October).

The “digital wellbeing” features are also missing although there is a beta of these features available once you have downloaded Android Pie.

On Google Pixel handsets, open the Settings menu. Scroll to the bottom of the menu and tap About device then System updates. Tap Check for update and it should appear.

The Android Pie Beta was previously available on Google Pixel, Essential Phone, OnePlus, Mi, Sony, Essential and Oppo handsets. That’s the Google Pixel and Pixel 2 (plus XL versions), Sony Xperia XZ2, Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S, Nokia 7 Plus, Oppo R15 Pro, Vivo X21, OnePlus 6 and Essential PH‑1 to be precise.

These handsets will, says Google, get the final version of Android Pie “by the end of this fall”. Not very specific and not that helpful considering these handsets were just as valid as test beds as Google’s own Pixel devices.

Check When is Android Pie coming to my phone?

The more traditional way to get the Android Pie is to go the system image/manual flashing route. You can download images from Google and then flash them onto your device, but it will be a fresh install, with everything erased. Here’s the site where you can download them.

      • Pixel 2
      • Pixel 2 XL
      • Pixel
      • Pixel XL

This page details how to flash while also providing step-by-step instructions that’ll get you going.

BE WARNED: flashing a system image will wipe all the information off your device, so ensure you back up important data beforehand.
