Malaysian partners roll out 5G biometric workforce management systems

telecom U Mobile and Hotayi Electronic (M) Sdn Bhd, a Malaysia- based electronics manufacturer, have co-created two 5G-enabled systems for mass workforce with face biometrics, reports Borneo Post. Their technology partner in the collaboration was Huawei, and the systems will be implemented through two use cases, set to be rolled out in Penang city.

The initial use cases are 5G-enabled Smart AI Facial Recognition and 5G-enabled Thermal Recognition; providing operational efficiency to Hotayi Electronic through high-speed accuracy in facial recognition and detection, according to the report. Hotayi employees entering offices will have their temperature scanned and assessed for abnormalities, a response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Furthermore, the facial recognition system will retrieve the identity of the potentially affected staff.

Hotayi's safety and security functions will be improved as both systems have the capability to not only capture up to 10 employees' faces and temperatures simultaneously, but also recognise structural features of faces in real-time, the Post writes. This includes identifying accessories like glasses or face masks. Hotayi Electronic was able to program a white list and black list of staff and, thanks to the system, any security breach would be detected immediately and security personnel alerted.

5G-enabled Thermal Recognition is part of MCMC's 5G Demonstration Projects (5GDP), recently featured as part of Techfest's 5G Tech Forward programme, which was organised by the National Tech Association of Malaysia (PIKOM).

Woon Ooi Yuen, U Mobile's CTO also announced plans for a commercial roll out of 5G in the second phase of the Government's National Digital Network (JENDELA) plan and the potential of 5G applications in the manufacturing industry.
