New Predator Game in Development at Friday the 13th Studio

In a surprise announcement made during Thursday’s PlayStation State of Play live stream, an all-new multiplayer game was revealed. Introducing Predator: Hunting Grounds, an asymmetric online multiplayer experience in development at the developer IllFonic Studios in partnership with Fox. And as a final surprise, Predator: Hunting Grounds appears to be a PlayStation exclusive, as it was announced as a Sony Worldwide Studios product. Excited fans can expect the game to launch in 2020.

The Predator: Hunting Grounds trailer did not feature gameplay footage, unfortunately. It instead focused on establishing the threat of a Predator on the hunt and a group of outmatched paramilitary soldiers with guns. IllFonic CEO Charles Brungardt provided some details later. The game takes heavy inspiration from the original Predator film in more ways than one.

Players controlling the soldiers will be armed with conventional weapons such as shotguns, SMGs, and sniper rifles. They will be tasked with carrying out missions like shooting enemies and recovering items from their camps. All the while the Predator will utilize alien technology to track and hunt soldiers without being seen.

IllFonic’s CEO admits that the game is still early in development and much of the game still has to be hammered out. However, he’s confident in what they’re creating based on their experience creating Friday the 13th. That, too, is an asymmetric multiplayer game in which the Friday the 13th villain Jason Voorhees hunts down survivors hidden throughout a camp. IllFonic will be applying the lessons it learned from Friday the 13th to Predator.

IllFonic’s clearly focusing on putting together a product true to the Predator origins, perhaps more than any previous Predator game. The cinematic trailer alone portrays the idea of a solo Predator alien secretly tracking and hunting a group of commandos perfectly.

The trailer even seems like an otherwise typical military shooter up until the camera pans up to show the camouflaged Predator. Brungardt’s comments and his description of gameplay only seems to cement IllFonic’s goals. Of course, intentions don’t always create results, and the flawed but fun Friday the 13th game proves that very well. Nevertheless, expect more information regarding Predator: Hunting Grounds over the next year, including more information regarding what may be an exclusivity deal with PlayStation.
