PlayStation 5 Exclusive Survival Game Abandoned Launching This Year

Blue Box Games Studios announces 5 exclusive survival game Abandoned, which will feature realistic combat and a vast open-world.

The exclusive lineup for 2021 already boasts some notable names, including Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, Horizon: Forbidden West, Kena Bridge of Spirits, Returnal, and Stray. It seems another game has just been added to that list, with the PlayStation Blog revealing Abandoned, a survival horror game developed by Blue Box Game Studios.

The new PS5 exclusive was announced alongside a short teaser, with the studio claiming it's aiming to release the game during Q4 of this year. It will allegedly be a hyper-realistic open-world experience, with its director, Hasan Kahraman, claiming the team is hoping to offer high-detail environments and gameplay that forces the player to think tactically.

According to Kahraman, Abandoned will see players assume the role of Jason Longfield. The character awakens at the start of the game in the middle of an expansive forest, not knowing where he is or how he got there. It seems the reasoning behind Jason's arrival in this strange setting will be imperative to the experience, with the director claiming he was “brought there for a dark purpose.”

Players will be tasked with finding a way to escape, as they fight back against enemies, endure the wilderness, and scavenge for resources to keep Jason alive. Combat will allegedly be a big part of the game, although that's not to say it'll be a typical run-and-gun shooter. Kahraman reveals that guns will be slow to fire and using up stamina by running will make aiming inaccurate. Players will be encouraged to hide, plan, and execute plans to defeat enemies, with the director stating that “a wrong move can be the deciding factor between surviving a combat scenario or not.”

The game's teaser shows off a short look at Abandoned's world, highlighting its snowy forest environments and a brief glimpse of the threats Jason will be up against. Namely, a narrator refers to a “strong, blood-loving community led by a religious nutjob,” as the trailer cuts to warnings threatening a grisly end to trespassers. It then concludes with the promise to reveal gameplay footage in the near future.

It already looks to be an exciting survival experience and another asset to the PlayStation 5's lineup of exclusives slated for this year. Kahraman already promises that it'll take advantage of the next-generation console's power, revealing in the PlayStation Blog post that Abandoned will run in 4K at 60 frames per second, while also promising it will use motion capture to create realistic character animations. It will also utilize the DualSense's haptic feedback and the console's innovative 3D audio to create a more immersive experience.

Abandoned is slated to launch this year on the PlayStation 5.
