Production on the Detective Pikachu movie is now in full swing. Filming on the live-action Pokemon movie began earlier this year with a release date expected in 2019. As this production continues, more details have trickled out about the movie’s release plans, including its official name and a brand new release window.
At the Pokemon World Championships event which took place earlier today, it was officially confirmed that the movie will be called Pokemon: Detective Pikachu. A neon-tinged logo was also revealed, with the film’s marketing to accentuate the famous blue and yellow of the Pokemon branding.
Moreover, the movie has a release date of summer 2019. It was previously announced that the movie’s release date would be May 10, 2019, but the less exact “summer” suggests that may have changed after the film changed distributors.

Those in attendance have also reported that the crowd was informed that the movie would include a battle between Pikachu and Charizard. The crowd was then instructed to cheer or boo for each character and perform chants, which were apparently recorded and will be used in the movie. Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds is voicing Detective Pikachu and so many will be wondering how his voice talents factor into this battle.
Other stars lending their voices to the movie include Godzilla‘s Ken Watanabe and The Get Down‘s Justice Smith. Bill Nighy, Suki Waterhouse, and singer Rita Ora are also expected to feature. It has already been established that the Detective Pikachu movie will be a rescue caper, as the titular Pokemon works to find the father of Justice Smith’s character. But the number of Pokemon battles that take place along the way is currently unknown.
With the movie’s release window now set and with production progressing at a steady rate, fans will be hoping that some sort of trailer is released soon. The upcoming Twitch Pokemon movie marathon will only increase fans’ appetites for a new, full-length Pokemon feature and a trailer may help satiate them. That same marathon will also introduce many people to this world of additional Pokemon media, so Warner Bros. will want to strike while the iron is hot. Fingers crossed that an official trailer will be made available at some point soon.
Pokemon: Detective Pikachu will be released in summer 2019.
