Google Photos Now Automates Video Editing

Google is rolling out an update to improve its video capabilities. The changes, which are now arriving on Android and iOS devices, add new manual editing tools and AI-powered presets to speed up the video-editing process.

Android users will see an immediate difference in the app’s interface. The video editor now displays essential video-editing tools more prominently, making them much easier to access. Additions include an updated trim tool, which allows users to cut footage more precisely, plus an Auto-enhance button for one-tap color correction and video stabilization. A new Slo-Mo tool also gives users control over the video’s pace, allowing for slow-motion or fast-forward effects.

Unsurprisingly, Android and iOS users also get a bevy of new video presets. These presets will automate common editing tasks, like trimming the video, adjusting lighting, controlling speed, or applying more complex effects. Users can also now add dynamic motion tracking of the main subject, zoom in on whatever is most important, or add slow-motion effects with just a few taps.

This update follows the video-flipping update that Google Photos introduced last week. Both updates add manual-editing features that come standard in other video-editing apps, though Google Photos’ AI tools are fairly unique. It seems that Google is focused on automating common tasks, which may make Google Photos more accessible to casual users who lack the time or experience to perform manual edits. Programs like Adobe Premier have a learning curve, so an app that only performs simple or automated edits is a great asset.

New Google Photos functionality is rolling out today on Android and iOS. This appears to be a server-side update, meaning that it should automatically arrive on devices running the latest version of Google Photos. That said, it may be a few days before Google completes this rollout.
