Reddit is down for desktop users, the latest in a string of summer outages

Reddit is back online for desktop users after an hours-long outage early Thursday morning. Reddit's status page said it was still investigating some residual issues, so users may still have some trouble accessing the site.

According to Down Detector, issues with Reddit began about 6:45 a.m. PT. They included content not loading, as well as users getting 503 error pages. Down Detector's outage map showed that the areas most affected by the outage were the U.S. and Europe.

Reddit's official Twitter account was silent about the outage even though many users were tweeting about it. Reddit's status page said it was “investigating [an] error on desktop web” as of 8:37 a.m. PT.

Users were reporting that the Reddit mobile app was still working despite issues with the desktop site. People took to Twitter to voice their frustrations of the outage.

It's been a difficult so far for the internet, as multiple popular websites and social media networks have had in recent weeks. Last Wednesday, Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp were down for nearly 12 hours. That was the second-longest outage in the platform's history, after a March outage that lasted for 15 hours. Cloudflare, a cloud computing company, also experienced a worldwide outage last week that affected sites like Discord, FlightRadar, Coinbase Pro, and more.

Google Cloud had issues last month with its G Suite products that outage was so widespread that some Nest smart home users were unable to unlock their front doors or control their air conditioning. Instagram users were frustrated from a brief outage in June as well.

TechCrunch said that the separate issues over the past month or so do not seem to be connected. However, it's probably a good idea to back up all of your data onto multiple platforms, just in case a major outage takes one of your favorite sites offline for hours (or worse).

Digital Trends has reached out to Reddit to comment on the issue and to provide any updates on the cause of the outage, but we have yet to hear back. We will continue to update this story as we find out more.
