How to Install Extensions on Chromium-Based Edge on Windows 10

The developer version of Microsoft Edge based on Chromium is available to test now. Here is how to install extensions on it from the Microsoft or Chrome web store.

Microsoft is rebuilding its Edge web browser based on Google’s Open Source Chromium engine. Right now, anyone can download and install Chromium-Edge on a Windows 10 PCs. It’s still an early developer version, but whether you’re a developer, enthusiast, or a curious early adopter you can start playing around with it. It doesn’t replace your current version of Edge or Chrome. It is a stand-alone browser and ready for testing.

If you decide to give it a go, one of the first things you will want to test out is extensions. It supports Edge extensions from Microsoft as well as all available Google Chrome extensions. Here is how to install them.

Install Edge Extensions on Chromium Edge

Remember when Edge was first released with Windows 10 in 2015 it didn’t even support extensions. However, over time, it has gained a good amount of quality extensions you can install via the Microsoft Store. And, you can still install them on the Chromium-based version. To get started, head to Settings > Extensions.

On the following page click search for a specific extension or click the “Get extensions from Microsoft Store” link.

The classic version of Edge opens the Microsoft Store, but not in Chromium Edge. Instead, it will open the Extensions section of the web-version of the Microsoft Store. Find and click on the one you want. You can review its description if needed and click the “Get” button. Then verify you want to install it and you’re good to go.

Install Google Chrome Extensions on Chromium Edge

Because we’re still in the early phases of Chromium Edge the first thing you need to do is enable extension support. Launch the browser and go to Settings > Extensions. Turn on the “Allow extensions from other stores” button on the bottom of the left panel and click “Allow” for the verification dialog.

Now you can head to the Chrome Web Store and install any Chrome extension you want. Just click the “Add to Chrome” button and then “Ad extension” to verify.

That’s it. Now your extensions will install just like they would if you were using Google Chrome. To see what you have installed, head to Settings > Extensions. There you will see a list of extensions installed from Microsoft Store and Google Chrome will show up under the “From other sources” section.

Remember, at the time of this writing, we’re still in the early versions of Microsoft Edge based on Chromium. So, some of the steps are sure to change when the final version is released to everyone. For example, right now there are two stores for extensions, but that will be standardized for the final products. We’ll update the process as the development continues to move forward.
