TikTok launches Effect House, a platform for AR effects
TikTok launches Effect House, its own AR augmented reality development platform. According to TikTok, around 450 creators have gone on to publish their effects on TikTok, where they’ve been used in 1.5 billion videos gaining over 600 billion views globally while operating in a close beta since last fall.
The addition of the latest TikTok feature brings it close to some of the features offered by rivals such as Snap and Meta. The new tool will enable developers to build out AR experiences and effects for their own respective families of applications.
Additionally, TikTok’s library of effects forms the key to powering its video service and inspiring creators to make videos. This helps creators build their own effects, and TikTok will be able to prompt even more video creation.
The tools available with Effect House may require additional technical skills. The documentation provided can help students and teachers learn how to use the platform to create specific types of effects, like Segmentation, Face Mask, Head Tracker, Face Stretch, 3D Face as well as how to use different textures, materials, lighting and shadows, and more.
There is also an additional set of dedicated guidelines for the Effect House. This is in addition to the existing Community Guidelines that creators must adhere to. Those failing to adhere to these will not be allowed on the TikTok platform.
The user-created effects will be reviewed by TikTok’s Trust and Safety team, to ensure they adhere to the company’s policies before they’re released to the public.
The community can report using the “Report Effect” feature if any company misses a violative effect. Additionally, an effect that violates the guidelines will be removed along with the video used in it.
TikTok will also hide a few creative effects, that depict alcohol, from appearing in the Effect Try in the app.
