9 industries to benefit when Malaysia launches its 5G network this 2020
Malaysia is on track to launch its 5G network in June 2020.
Back in January 2020, the government ran a control test in the island state of Langkawi. They managed to achieve gigabit speeds on a Huawei 5G phone.
Just this week, the Malaysian government has announced the industries that will be the focus area for 5G technologies.
These areas include agriculture, education, entertainment, healthcare, manufacturing, oil and gas, smart city, smart transportation, and tourism.
Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commissions (MCMC) chairman Al-Ishsal Ishak said, “5G technology is an economic imperative for Malaysia as it has the power to rejuvenate industries that are integral to the country’s economy.”
He also quoted a statement from the World Bank report that a 10 percent increase in fixed broadband penetration would contribute to 1.38 percent of a country’s gross domestic product (GDP).
Ishak also added that a study conducted by the Malaysia Institute of Economic Research (MIER) showed that investing in the communication infrastructure sector would help Malaysia achieve convergence as a high-income country.
“Following this study, MCMC has approached MIER to conduct a study on the impact of 5G to various industries in Malaysia,” said Ishak.
He concluded by saying that 5G will enable small entrepreneurs to participate in various economic activities and provide a communication infrastructure for the people as well.
Malaysia is expected to power 6 states – Kedah, Perak, Penang, Selangor, Terengganu and the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur – with 5G by June 2020.
