CD Projekt Red Offering More Compensation to Witcher Series Creator

Back in October, Andrzej Sapowski, the creator of The Witcher series, demanded additional compensation from game developer CD Red due to the widespread success of the series in recent years. While Sapkowski won’t be receiving the full amount of royalties he originally requested, the two sides appear to have come to an amicable agreement.

At first, Andrjez Sapkowski had demanded $60 million PLN (Polish zloty), which equals just over $16 million USD, for royalties related to sequel and spin-off games in The Witcher video game series. While the official amount Sapkowski will receive hasn’t been revealed publicly yet, it’s been reported he will receive far less than what was asked for back in October. Sapkowski’s lawyers seem to understand the stipulations of the original agreement made over a decade ago, but they feel that CD Projekt Red should consider royalties to the author out of goodwill.

The Polish fantasy novelist, who will turn 71 this year, had originally made a deal for the first game in the franchise for $35,000 PLN ($9,350 USD). The deal did not include receiving royalties for any other games CD Projekt Red intended to release in the series. In the past 12 years, the developer has expanded its lineup of Witcher games greatly, including the likes of The Witcher 2: Assassin of Kings (2011), The Witcher Battle Arena (2014), The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (2015), Gwent: The Witcher Card Game (2018), and most recently Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales (2018).

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has been the most successful of the games mentioned, having sold over 30 million copies while also receiving Game of the Year honors at The 2015 Game Awards. The video game success of The Witcher has also seen the property transition into a Netflix streaming starring Henry Cavill. However, the TV series has its own deal with Sapowski and will be based on his books.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is available now for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
