Devolver Digital Teases New Game Announcement

publisher Devolver , reveals that there's going to be an all-new game announcement coming up later this week.

Devolver Digital has got a rich and storied history of publishing smaller-scale video games that end up getting both critical acclaim and fan adoration in due time. Titles such as Hotline Miami, Inscryption, and most recently Cult of the Lamb are just some examples of indie-tier titles that helped Devolver make a name for itself.

This apparent trend may continue sooner rather than later, as Devolver Digital just revealed that there will be a new game announcement coming up later this week. This announcement of an announcement isn't too telling on its own, but fans of the company's previous publishing efforts should have a good idea of the scope and scale of this unannounced project.

There's just about nothing specific to suggest what the soon-to-be-announced Devolver Digital game might be, but the publisher has only really focused on indie productions in the past. While there's a world of difference between a game such as Cult of the Lamb and Carrion, for example, the two titles are still relatively small projects with limited budgets that don't focus on cutting-edge graphics to draw players in. With that in mind, the mysterious new title is sure to be in line with other games shown during Devolver Digital's June showcase, where gameplay is king.

At the same time, one could make the argument that Devolver Digital has been upping the stakes over the past couple of years. The Plucky Squire features incredibly impressive design work that isn't all too common even in the AAA space. Whereas the publisher once worked on pixel-art games almost exclusively, its latest announcements paint a more ambitious picture than some may have expected out of Devolver.

In fact, the recently announced ultra-fast FPS Anger Foot seems like a slick and brutal shooter that kicks above its weight in areas of gameplay and polish. All the aforementioned examples go to show how steady Devolver has been since its inception, and serve as a sort of seal of quality for fans of the publisher's output. Finding some of the most exciting indie developers and helping them bring their projects to fruition has been Devolver's approach to publishing since the start, and this is bound to continue moving forward, too.

On that note, it may be worth pointing out that Sony recently invested in Devolver Digital, boosting the indie publisher's market value. This, combined with Devolver's track record in pushing out successful indie darlings, may have emboldened the studio more than ever before. So, while it's anyone's guess what the mysterious announcement might be, it seems like a safe bet that it's going to be something that indie fans will want to keep an eye out for.
