Ghost of Tsushima Offers Free Dynamic PS4 Theme

Sucker Punch Productions has apparently gotten into the holiday spirit with the release of a free theme for its upcoming action-adventure game of Tsushima.

Though not holiday-themed, the free dynamic theme definitely feels like a gift for the season and will be available until January 31, 2020. The silhouette of the game’s samurai protagonist stands motionless in a dimly lit forest as his cloak flutters in the breeze.

Sucker Punch Productions is a development studio founded in 1997 and has thus far created two successful franchises, Sly Cooper and Infamous. Its latest venture, Ghost of Tsushima, will be a PS4 exclusive and follows the story of the first Mongol invasion of Japan in 1274. The player takes on the role of Jin Sakai, one of the last surviving samurai on the island of Tsushima who must help repel the invaders and win back Japan’s independence. In the process, he will learn that honorable tactics and samurai traditions must sometimes be cast aside and unconventional methods of fighting embraced.

The story of the Mongol invasions upon which the game is based is factual. Under Kublai Khan, the Mongols invaded Japan in 1274 and 1281 in an attempt to expand their empire. The Battle of Tsushima Island was the first battle of the first invasion and resulted in a Mongol victory. Many of the inhabitants of Tsushima Island were slaughtered and the story still holds national significance in the history of Japan. Though Ghost of Tsushima is fictional, the development team consulted with both cultural authorities and a sword-fighting expert to create an authentic historical experience.

For those on the hunt for additional gratis goodies, a free holiday dynamic theme for Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, another action-adventure game set in Japan, was released on the PlayStation Store earlier this month. House House also released a free dynamic theme last week for its highly rated puzzle-stealth game, Untitled Goose Game. And even Sony Santa Monica got into the spirit of giving and made God of War’s pre-order bonuses available on the US and EU PlayStation Stores at no cost until January 6.

Ghost of Tsushima will be available on PS4 in the summer of 2020.
