GTA producer new game Everywhere looks like Roblox for adults
Leslie Benzies has offered the first proper look at his new game creation tool Everywhere and it could be the next Minecraft… or Dreams.
As much as people are looking forward to GTA 6 there’s been a lot of concern about the steady exodus of staff that worked on the earlier games. A number of writers have gone over the last couple of years but the most significant exit is the unsung hero of the franchise: Leslie Benzies.
He’s been working on the series since Grand Theft Auto 3 and was producer and co-designer on GTA 5. But he left Rockstar in 2016, as part of what seems to have been a very messy divorce, and since then he’s been working on a new game called Everywhere.
Up until now it’s not really been clear what Everywhere is – other than it’s not a GTA clone – but the trailer below makes it obvious that rather than a traditional video game this is a game creator tool, similar to Roblox and Dreams.
Everywhere is now far enough along that a closed alpha test is imminent (suggesting the finished version will be at least a year or two way), so that should also help to clarify exactly what the game is.
There also seems to be a PlayStation Home style vibe to a lot of the trailer, implying social hubs where you can just hang out and chat, as well as pre-made mini-games and biomes.
Although having to create your own content does tend to put a lot of people off, with Dreams never proving much of a hit, Roblox is the most successful video game in the world at the moment – with its main rival being the similarly customisable Minecraft.
Fortnite’s Creative mode is also more popular than ever, and the trailer certainly seems to be going for that audience as well, given the art design and general tone.
If you want to try and sign up for the closed alpha you can try your luck on the official website.
