Mortal Kombat 11 Unlocking Cosmetics Sounds Like a Slow and Brutal Grind
For many players, Mortal Kombat 11 will primarily be about testing their skills against other players in online battle. For these fans, the game’s single-player offering, and its associated unlockable cosmetics, may matter very little.
However, those that are looking forward to diving into the Towers of Time and Krypt, and obtaining cosmetics for their favorite Mortal Kombat 11 characters, could be in for a rude awakening.
Indeed, players that have gotten their hands on a copy of the game prior to the Mortal Kombat 11 release date are expressing concerns about the grind associated with acquiring things like character skins, gear pieces, fatalities, taunts, and more. This grind begins with the Towers of Time, and there is now full detail on how this game mode works in Mortal Kombat 11.
While there are a number of aspects of the Towers of Time, the character-specific Towers are the ones that are currently getting the most attention. With these Towers, players can select their preferred character and be guaranteed to earn cosmetic items for that fighter in particular. However, some fans are suggesting that the required time investment may be too great to justify the rewards provided.

In a highly detailed post on the Test Your Might forums, user Prateek Shekhar outlines this phenomenon. Essentially, not only are coins required to unlock character-specific Towers, but players must also complete tasks as well. These tasks include things like executing 100 Krushing Blows or spilling 25,000 pints of blood, and thus just gaining access to Towers seems to require a significant amount of time.
Once inside the Tower, things seemingly get worse, as players are describing extreme spikes in difficulty. Unblockable attacks and stunning assists already seem to be giving some Mortal Kombat 11 fans fits, especially when coupled with damage nerfing modifiers.
Considering the requirements to enter a Tower, and the challenges that wait inside, fans might expect significant Mortal Kombat 11 gear unlocks, but that does not appear to be the case here. Prateek Shekhar provides a specific example to make this point, stating that for 75,000 gold, 25,000 pints of blood split, 100 Krushing Blows, and the completion of these difficult Tower players will receive a few augments, a couple of gear pieces, skins, and variation icons, a victory pose, and a taunt.
Then there is the Krypt, where players can spend gold to open chests that have a chance to provide cosmetics. While players will indeed earn desirable cosmetics here, such as Mortal Kombat 11 fatalities and character intros, there is also the chance that they will walk away with just consumables and concept art.
Simply, it has been indicated that the sheer volume of non-cosmetic items that can be obtained through the Krypt makes the frequency of obtaining desirable items very low. For some, this may sound like Mortal Kombat 11‘s take on loot boxes.
All of this said, it is possible that some aspect of this grind will be adjusted upon the game’s official release. At this time though, it seems that players that wish to obtain all of the Mortal Kombat 11 cosmetics have a very long journey ahead of them, assuming they do not just break down and pay to unlock them.
Mortal Kombat 11 is scheduled to release on April 23, 2019 for PC, PlayStation 4, Switch, and Xbox One.
