Nintendo Switch sales

Sony recently did a bit of chest beating about the fact that the PlayStation brand, including the original PlayStation, PS2, PS3, PS4, PSP, and PS Vita, has sold over 500 units (525.3 million to be exact). They even announced a slick new limited-edition PS4 Pro model to celebrate.

Well, it turns out Sony isn't the only console manufacturer to pass a major milestone recently. Nintendo released updated numbers at the end of June, and it turns out their total console sales have just inched past the 300 million mark (300.54 million to be precise). Here's the full breakdown:

  • NES – 61.91
  • SNES – 49.10
  • N64 – 32.93
  • GameCube – 21.74
  • Wii – 101.63
  • Wii U – 13.56
  • Switch –  19.67
  • Total – 300.54 million

Not quite as impressive as Sony's 500 million figure, but wait – Sony included the PSP and PS Vita in their numbers! That means Nintendo gets to count its handheld sales, too. With those, The Big N blows Sony out of the water – their dedicated handhelds, including the Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, DS, and 3DS have sold a whopping 427.11 million units. Combine that number with their console sales, and Nintendo has moved a grand total of 727.65 million systems. Dang! Here's the handheld breakdown:

  • Game Boy – 118.69
  • Game Boy Advance – 81.51
  • DS – 154.02
  • 3DS – 72.89
  • Total – 427.11 million

Sadly, Nintendo isn't releasing a sweet new Switch model to celebrate their recent milestone. Nintendo plans to sell 20 million Switch units during the current fiscal year (which ends March 31, 2019). Nintendo only sold 1.88 million Switches during Q1, so they have their work cut out for them, but Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Pokémon: Let's Go should move some hardware later this year.

What's your favorite Nintendo system? Do you think anybody will ever catch up to them in terms of total hardware sales?
