In the last few years, Malaysia‘s startup and technology ecosystem has undergone a massive transformation with the startup community attracting investments to the tune of $1.45 billion in 2016, according to a report by Pagan Research. The Malaysian startup ecosystem has also incubated a number of deep tech startups working in the field of AI, 3D face recognition, sentiment robot, etc.

1| Artificial Intelligence in Medical Epidemiology (AIME)

AIME is a tech company that researches on epidemiology. Malaysia may be called as the first country to use the mobile app for disease prediction. Dr Dhesi Raja along with two other scientists founded this platform that predicts the risk of disease outbreaks.

Use of AI

The model gives an average of 86.37% of predictive accuracy and has been tested in more than 2 countries. They use public health data, social media rumour reports, etc for prediction.

This Silicon Valley startup modelled a web-based app that helps in preventing diseases like dengue and zika and predicting the outbreaks up to 3 months in advance. It was successfully tested on countries like Malaysia and Brazil and the results were fairly accurate.

This startup is based in Pulau Pinang, Malaysia that helps the merchants to protect their online e-commerce stores from malicious fraudsters. It shows all the sales orders that are transacted using credit cards, PayPal, etc.

Use of AI

The model used here is a pro-analytic engine that analyses transactions parameters and based on that report fraud analysis in a fraction of seconds as well as the analysis of transactions in the merchant area. It uses blacklists based algorithm paired with machine learning technology.

Some of the key features of this model are custom validation rules, SMS verification, social profile query, mobile app notification of fraud orders, etc.

3| Glueck Technolgies

This startup was set up 4 years ago and bagged the ASEAN Rice Bowl startup in the Best DeepTech space. This technology startup is based in Selangor, Malaysia and is mainly focused on human emotion analysis.

Use of AI

The startup deploys emerging technologies like artificial intelligence, deep learning, machine learning and facial recognition for detecting human emotions. The algorithm they use detects human emotional state and responses to real-life stimuli. Cameras take pictures every few microseconds and the data is processed against the database of facial demographics that contains over five million people from 65 countries.

Product

Their product is used to help businesses measure the users’ moods by detecting facial expression, age estimation, gender, ethnicity, multi-face tracking and attention time. The application areas include digital signage, market research, security, retails, research, health care, education and animation.

4| Hyperlab

Hyperlab is a Malaysia-based conversational AI company that has been acquired by Asia-based global experience company Everise. The company is awarded as the Best Data Driven Newcomer in the 4th annual DataStorage Asean Awards 2018.

This startup company has built a chatbot tool for helping companies to automate their customer and employee experiences. The technology used here is the multilingual AI platform along with robust orchestration and automation layer. They primarily specialise in Southeast Asian languages like Bahasa Malaysia, Manglish (colloquial Malaysian), Singlish (Singaporean English), Mandarin including English.

Their products include Happy AI Assistant and Dialex Text Cleanser. Happy AI assistant is an advanced AI assistant that helps to automate customer support and sales on any channel.
